COURSE DESCRIPTION: ART II DRAWING (ART2DR) Semesters: 2 Credit:1 Grades: 10-12 Prerequisite: Art I or Art Appreciation DC Fee: $30 semester This beginning drawing course will focus on traditional subject matter such as portraits, landscape, and still-life. In addition, students will learn mark-making as a tool for personal expression. Students will use a wide range of drawing materials.
PURPOSE This year long course will focus on drawing as a descriptive and expressive method of communication. Students will learn to depict the three-dimensional world in two-dimensions as well as create inventive and original drawings. Using a variety of wet and dry materials, the class will address composition, line, value, linear and atmospheric perspective, and figure drawing. Students will also view and discuss images of contemporary art and conduct group critiques.
COURSE OUTCOMES In completing this course, the student will Demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of art and design. Demonstrate skills in a variety of media. Use and understand visual vocabulary in class discussion and critique. Prepare a sketchbook and homework. Prepare artworks for exhibit that demonstrate creative expression as well as craftsmanship. Develop a critical appreciation of visual culture.
REQUIRED MATERIALS There is no textbook. All materials will be provided. However, there is a required $30.00 fee per semester to offset the cost of those materials. The cost is really quite low compared to purchasing the materials individually. Art supplies are very expensive! If your family is having financial difficulties, please contact Ms. Little and arrangements can be made to waive or reduce the fee.
Students are welcome, but not required to purchase materials for use at home in their sketchbook. Throughout the year, students will be asked to bring reference materials from home.

EXPECTATIONS Students are expected to maintain regular attendance and arrive to class on time ready to participate. Students are expected to keep a sketchbook to draw in at home. Sketchbooks will be collected and graded every 9 weeks. There is no mid-term exam. The final project will be a series of drawings based on a theme designed by the student.
EVALUATION IN CLASS ASSIGNMENTS: Work completed in class will receive either a “daily” or “major” grade. Daily grades are assignments that place emphasis on learning new techniques and are graded only for effort and completion. Major grades are longer assignments that require consideration of content and composition. Quality projects demonstrate a high level of technical skill, creativity, and personal investment. If a student is unable to finish a project in class, they should complete the work at home in order to meet the due date.
