Course Description: The AP Program in Studio Art is an introductory college course intended for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art. Ap Students must have previous training in art and be committed to submit a portfolio of artwork to the College Board for evaluation at the end of the school year. An AP student’s commitment goes beyond the normal school day, and requires students to work diligently outside of school as well. If the portfolio successfully meets the College Board Requirements, the student will earn fine art college credit.
Portfolio: Students are expected to complete a portfolio, which contains the following 2 areas:
1. Sustained Investigation – Section 1. 15 digital images; some may be details or process images | 60% of portfolio score Students will submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision:
A minimum of 15 digital images that include works of art and design and process documentation.
Typed responses to prompts, providing information about the questions that guided their investigation and how they practiced, experimented, and revised, guided by their questions.
2. Selected Works – Section 2 10 digital images | 40% of portfolio score Students will submit works of art and design and writing to demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas:

Grading policy: Students will earn at least 1 major grade per 3 week period for major projects completed. At least one daily grade per week from sketchbooks, documentation, photo documentation, and daily work. Final Artworks cannot be turned in more than once. If the work shows revision and is part of the process an exception can be made. Documentation must prove significant changes. Late work: Turning in late work will result in a 10 point deduction per day for the first 3 days. After the 3rd day, students receive a zero. Storage of work/Supplies: Students will be given studio space to keep supplies and works in progress as well as completed work. It is the student’s responsibility to take care of their work and to keep up with their materials. Supplies: An art fee of $100 will cover almost all of the supplies needed to produce the portfolio. Every effort will be made to anticipate the supply needs of all students. If a student needs a supply that we do not have, he or she will have to acquire it on their own. Please make checks payable to Alvin High School in the memo please write the student’s name. If you choose to pay cash please bring the exact amount. Payments can be made on My School Bucks as well. Photography/Documentation: Students must photograph and document their work. They will compile a digital portfolio that will be used to fill their online portfolio submission at the end of the year. Students will need a camera or a phone with a high quality camera for this purpose. Attendance: In order for students to keep up with deadlines, they are expected to attend and work proficiently in class everyday.
